The *fucking* Secret

About a month ago Oprah featured The Secret on her show. It's a book and/or DVD that purports to reveal the secret to success. Hard work, drive, smarts, winning personality? No. New Age bullshit Law of Attraction. In other words, the thoughts you have have a specific frequency. Events and things in the world have frequencies too. And magically, the frequencies of your thoughts resonate with the frequencies of events and attract them to you. So if you think about winning the lottery all the time. I mean really think about it, you will win the lottery. But if you slip up, you'll be thinking negative things, and you'll get hit by a car, cause that's a negative thing.

Now, there's something to be said for having a positive attitude, and about thinking about the things you want, if that gets you to plan and execute to get the things you want.

Beyond that, it's utter fucking bullshit. Hell, most science these days actually casts doubt on the existence of real free will.

I can't believe that this sort of pseudo-scientific bullshit passes these days. People are stupid enough to believe it. Do you believe it? Then you are stupid!

Why am I ranting about it? Cause the program director for Community for Youth played the DVD for a bunch of high school students tonight. Perhaps next week we'll be telling them about intelligent design.

Erg.

It's been a huge hit at my school. Go figure. A classmate told of a website to go to and see it for myself. Then she told me that it's like $4 to download or something. Yeah right not going to do it. Guess they just made lots of money on that.

Energetics is becoming a big deal in healing. Sadly, anyone can say anything about it and people will believe cause it's such a mystery. *sigh* I will not go off on a rant. Way to much homework to do.

mind over matter, intentions, etc. all the same thing.

gah

I was just complaining about it to someone yesterday. I had not had the pleasure of seeing it for myself though. The Davinci Code outtakes at the beginning are beyond mocking.

And it's not magical! It's like gravity! Or quantum mechanics! Or electricity! Or magnets!

Fortunately I think most of the students were smart enough not to believe it.

Well, at least the ones with issues with authority won't buy it.

OK. Talk about coincidences. I didn't see your post until today, but looking at the time, you posted this about 10 minutes before I had a conversation with Shane about "The Secret." He was telling me that people seem to love it, but I'd never heard of it. It sounds like I need to check this out for the joke value alone.

I think you and I, two grumpy old folks, should write our own self help book titled, "Your life is gonna suck sometimes, so deal." What do you think?

May I suggest the title "Shit Happens"?

It's true!

You were thinking about it, so you attracted it!!! You don't even need to watch it, it'll just appear if you think about it. But don't think negative thoughts, because then you'll get a parking ticket.

My biggest problem with BS like this is that it relieves the rest of society from social responsibility. Those who are persecuted/impoverished/addicted etc. (be they an individual or a group) are that way because of their attitude. So it’s their responsibility to make change happen, not mine.

I think the “Your life is gonna suck sometimes, so deal." Book should be required reading in your mentoring group as a valid competing view. :)
