I was battered today for the first time since 2005. First time from a stranger too.
A woman arrived at my bus stop about the same time as me, and at first I thought she was arguing with someone on the phone. But you know where I'm going with that. She was actually having an incoherent argument with an invisible person. For 20 minutes or so. I mostly ignored it, as this is the city. Just looked up occasionally as I was texting back and forth with Erin.
Suddenly, she looked at me then threw her bottle of VitaminWater at me, hard. It hit me in the knee pretty good and drenched my pants and shoes. Then she glared at me for a few moments, never breaking conversational stride with whoever she was arguing with. I dialed 911 but didn't hit send, held up the phone and told her to go find another bus stop or she'd have to deal with the cops. She looked angry and walked about 20 feet away and then stopped. I yelled at her to continue on and then she did.
I had one flash of anger right after I was hit, but that dissipated really quickly. I'm not really sure what the best course of action is for such situations, but I wanted to both be somewhat compassionate and be firm and safe at the same time.
