You have to find a new doctor for some reason. On your first visit, you notice the doctor is wearing a Starfleet medical pin on his lapel.

Depends on how limited my choices are.

Not being able to separate one's hobbies from one's profession like that....yeah, that would disturb me. Especially in a field like medicine. I'd find someone else.

Since it looks like a perfectly ordinary caduceus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caduceus) with nothing particularly Trek-ish or future-ish about it, I wouldn't blink an eye. Maybe he was an Army medic and kept his branch tab or something.

The way I see it, if the guy went through years of struggle and hard work to complete medical school, get licensed, and establish and prove himself in a successful practice, he's earned the right to wear whatever the hell kind of medical pin he wants (as long as it doesn't misrepresent his education or area of specialty).

Seriously, as long as it was a small, discreet little pin, I don't see it as obsessive or anything. If he starts putting pictures of Dr. McCoy up on his office wall, that's another story.

Just as I gravitate toward friends with similar interests, I also gravitate toward professionals who might share them. Any hint of sci-fi or fantasy geekdom, gothiness or alternative lifestyles (and I do mean hint, not a brazenly unprofessional in your face type announcement) usually makes me feel at ease and wins points with me when I'm deciding who to give my business to. Who doesn't want to be in the hands of a professional they consider one of "their own"?

Of course if you're not a sci-fi geek, you might not be so comfortable with a doctor who displays his fandom. So I wouldn't blame you at all for having second thoughts.
