Bali. It's beach. It's cultural. It's foreign. Anyone been to Bali? Should I pick it?

Bali is the stereotypical "place to go". so long as there aren't any tsunamis while you're there, might as well before they overdevelop it like all the plans i saw while i lived on Kauai from some company that builds hotels.

Bali's pretty Indian. you might want to reconsider the Carribbean.

As I understand it, it wasn't the "Indian" part that freaked him out, but rather that where he went in Indian is not exactly the typical "tourist friendly" type of environment.

Could be wrong though.

you can wander into that kind of environment everywhere. but i get what you're saying, though i don't know any specifics.

i'm just picturing Phil in India, sporting a pith helmet, saying "tally ho" and sporting English clothing while sipping tea, and in Bali under a cabana on a white sand beach doing something similar. *shakes head* GAHHHHHH!!!

toss in a little servant boy somewhere, and it's even more frightening.

If u go 2 bali sum terrerist wil blow u up!

(I expect that if the idea of sandy tourist beaches and swelteringly hot temperatures sounds appealing, then Bali would be a great place to get that. Not my personal preference, but then I'm weird.)

Never been, but spent a piece of time studying Bali in my SouthEast Asia class.

From what I know, it is beautiful, very touristy (so watch your wallet, both from pick pockets and jacked up prices), but by the same token, very, very tourist friendly. They take a lot of pride in sharing their culture with tourists, so side trips to villages and temples and ceremonies are readily available. Lots of things to see, and do, or many options to just veg.

Personally, if you want to do foreign alone, I think Bali would be quite nice for you.

As long as the humidity doesn't kill you.

Yes. I was just talking with a friend today how I'd like to be in Bali right about now.
