Looking over the Hugo award winners for the last few years, I notice that Lois McMaster Bujold has won a few times for best novel. I haven't read anything by her yet. Am I missing out? Should I pick something up (and what)? Or are her wins a product of the fact that the Hugos are a popularity contest?

i've read a bunch of her stuff but no title stands out in my memory. maybe she just has a very recognizable name? i think she did a bunch of good collarborations. if i bothered to look her up, i'm sure i could answer your question properly.

It's a mix. Much of her stuff is like the Dragonrider books in depth and complexity (eg; great for teenagers). Some of her stuff is pretty good. There's definitely a tendency towards the underdog and the soap opera though.

Ro recommends the "Miles" series or something. She say's they're really good, and she reads a LOT.
